The Sports Steering Group
The Sports Steering Group (formerly the Sports Board) was founded by Sir Rodney Walker, member of the National Volunteer Board and Patron of the FULL STOP Appeal in 1999.
The Group/Board has raised over £25 million, securing 20 patron level members all donating £100,000 to the FULL STOP Appeal along with the support of fundraising initiatives such as the “Fair Play initiative” – a partnership with Sport Relief promoted by Michael Owen, Denise Lewis and Jonny Wilkinson which raised £1 million. The Board has also spearheaded events including Business of Winning gala dinners which featured Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger and Gerard Houllier and the “An Evening with” series with Alan Shearer, Harry Redknapp and Chris Robshaw.
Following the FULL STOP Appeal, Sir Rodney stepped down as Chairman of the Sports Steering Group and vice chairman, Sir David Richards, Chairman of the Premier League took over. In 2012 Sir Dave Richards retired from the Premier League and handed over Chairmanship of the Sports Board to Alex Horne, then General Secretary of The FA.
The Board is going through a period of change whilst it refocuses to look at how we can use the group most effectively to utilise the opportunities and synergies between the sporting industry and children and young people to raise awareness, improve safeguarding and raise significant income to support the NSPCC’s work with children. The group will act as a voice for the charity in the sports industry, to champion NSPCC initiatives and encourage their wide dissemination via sport’s unique comms channels.
The countless endorsements, adoptions and personal celebrity appearances from the world of sport have been amazing and vital in raising public awareness of the NSPCC and child protection issues, with sporting ambassadors such as Jonny Wilkinson, Alan Shearer, James Milner and Ambassador for Childhood, Wayne Rooney lending their support to our campaigns.

The Property Board
The Property sector has been identified as a new route to market for the NSPCC to create awareness of and drive income to help us achieve our vision. The Property Board has been created to bring together a group of diverse, highly skilled, and experienced senior personnel from the sector who will offer as a group or individually vital assets to help support our work and raise funds.
We officially launched the board in June 2021 and have created a strategy for the board, as well as recruiting the Board Chair and nine board members. We are looking to recruit up to five further board members to ensure that we have a broad skillset and representation across the sector.
In 2021 we secured our first Property Board partnership with Property Week and were the beneficiary charity of their RESI Awards in December 2021, which gave us the opportunity to promote the NPSCC and the new board to a brand-new audience within the sector. We raised over £37,000 from the opportunity. We benefitted again in May 2022 raising over £27,000.
The board is focused on raising funds to build safer communities for children and young people. They have decided to prioritise three of our important services that they feel will aid in achieving this goal. The first service area that they will fundraise for is Child Online Safety, as even though a child’s home is where they should feel safe and protected, they can often be exposed to harmful content online.
The second service that the board believed is crucial for a safe community is Listen up, Speak up. This campaign is designed to raise public awareness of potential indicators of child abuse or neglect and inform them where they can go if they need support. The final service that the board supports by raising funds for is the Helpline which provides adults with advice, guidance, support, and a place to turn to if they have concerns about a child who is either being abused or at risk of abuse. The Helpline can also take action on the adult’s behalf.
